Chopped Avocado With Milk Chocolate Powder

Several weeks ago when I went to buy groceries, I saw avocados and felt that I wanted to buy them. I had not eaten any avocados after arriving at Japan. I really liked and used to eat a lot of avocados in Indonesia. So at that time I felt an urge to eat avocado again.
There were no soft and ripe avocados in the store at that time, so I just took two avocados which were still hard. I also bought milk chocolate powder. After going back to the dormitory, I opened one of the avocados and wanted to eat it like how I used to eat it in Indonesia, mashing it and then adding sugar and chocolate powder into it.

Just the Four of Cheese – Kastengel Making
February 13, 2010 at 1:08 PM | Posted in Food, Japan, Just for fun | 4 CommentsTags: making kastengel
On February 11th, 2010, my roommate, Dita, and I made kastengel at Isa and Yudha’s house. Actually, we decided to make kastengel quite suddenly. Dita said that she wanted to eat kastengel the night before. Her mother sent her the recipe and then we bought the ingredients and made kastengel the next day. We already had some ingredients needed for making kastengel, we only lacked edam cheese and butter. So I went to OK Store to buy some cheese and butter. In OK Store I could not find any edam cheese. So we changed the type of cheese we would use, we used 4 kinds of cheese mixed together: original cheese, cheddar cheese, gouda, and parmesan cheese. That’s why I used the title “Just the Four of Cheese”, inspired from Dita’s blog post title, “Just the four of us – Ikebukuro Trip“.
Making kastengel without proper equipment (mixer) and proper kind of cheese (edam) was very tiring. I mixed the margarine and butter, and then put in some egg and flour, while Dita grated the cheese. It was very tiring to beat the butter which was quite hard. It was also difficult to grate the cheese which was too soft. Dita even shredded her fingers. But after all, we managed to make the kastengel dough and shaped it then baked it in the oven. 45 minutes were needed to bake 1 batch of kastengel. We baked several batches of kastengel, and we left Isa-Yudha’s house at about 00.20 bringing our kastengel home.
Thanks Isa and Yudha for letting us make kastengel at your kitchen and use your oven.

Burnt Carrot In Steamer
February 12, 2010 at 3:15 PM | Posted in Food, Japan, Just for fun | 1 CommentTags: burnt carrot, croquette
In the end of January, I made croquettes again after making croquettes for my host family’s Christmas dinner last time. The recipe was almost the same as before, I just changed the type of meat used in the croquettes.
One of the ingredients I used for the filling was carrot. I steamed the carrot first so that it would soften and it would be easier for me to stir-fry the filling. I bought a microwave steamer, so I usually steam everything needed to be steamed in the microwave. It’s much easier and faster. I also steamed the carrot in the microwave.
DIY Snack, Cheap Snack 2

On last Saturday, I made another snack again. This time, it was potato chips. I have already eaten up all my sweet potato chips, so I made new snacks again.
This time, the reason why I chose to make potato chips was also the same as before. Potatoes are on sale. I got 5 small size potatoes for 99 yen. It was quite a good price for potatoes. The spices needed to make potato chips are just the same as the sweet potato chips I made before. I only used garlic and salt liquid and then I soaked the potato slices in it. So I won’t explain about the process in detail here.
DIY Snack, Cheap Snack
December 2, 2009 at 1:29 AM | Posted in Food, Japan | 4 CommentsTags: snack, sweet potato chip
I am a person who likes to eat snacks like chips, chocolates, cookies, ice cream and crackers. I usually buy a lot of snacks whether in Indonesia or in Japan. But in Japan, the price of snacks is quite expensive compared to snacks in Indonesia. Besides that, the varieties of snacks like chips in Japan are not as many as in Indonesia. Usually the most popular chips sold are potato chips and snacks with corn flavor. There are also banana chips and sweet potato chips, but they are not as easy to find as potato chips. So, I decided to make snacks by myself to get cheaper snack which is different from snacks sold in stores.
