On April 17th-18th 2010, I had a home-stay at Utsunomiya (宇都宮), Tochigi Prefecture (栃木県). I stayed in Naka-san’s (印波ナカ) house. First, there was an opening ceremony for this home-stay program. I met her for the first time there. After the opening ceremony, all of us had lunch together, there were several kinds of food cooked, and I had some conversation with Naka-san at that time. Despite my still-poor Japanese, Naka-san was very patient to have conversation with me.

Hanami (花見)

It is spring now, cherry blossoms are blooming everywhere. Usually during this time, Japanese will gather with their friends or family and have hanami (flower viewing) under the cherry blossom trees. Usually people will gather in the park or public places which have a lot of cherry blossom trees, bring some food and drink and enjoy their time under the cherry blossom trees.
Yesterday, Indonesian students studying in Tokodai also had hanami in Shinjuku Gyoen (新宿御苑). It is a park with many different kinds of cherry blossoms in it. It is open from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm, with 200 yen admission fee for one person. But for people going in a group (30 people or more), the admission fee will be reduced to 150 yen per person.
In this hanami, everybody brought some food or drink to be shared with each other. There were also some introductions of new students coming to Tokodai. After having some introduction of new students and lunch, the photo session came. I walked around the park and took some pictures of the cherry blossoms.

But I enjoyed that celebration very much. My host mother cooked many kinds of food. I also cooked croquette and brought it to that Christmas dinner.

On Sunday, November 18th 2009, I went to お台場 with my host mother, Kitty ちゃん, and my host mother’s friend. It was located at Tokyo Bay, and actually it was a reclamation land at Tokyo Bay. The first place we went to was the Rainbow Bridge (レインボーブリッジ). It was called Rainbow Bridge because on certain occasions, the light of the bridge would be rainbow-colored at night and it would be very beautiful.

One of the interesting things of YSEP program is we were offered homestay program at a Japanese family during our stay in Japan. Actually, other foreign students who were not from YSEP program had the same opportunity to join this homestay too. In this homestay program, we stayed at a Japanese family’s house for one night and it’s up to us how we wanted to interact with our homestay family. But usually they would hold a small party for us together with other homestay families nearby.
