Just the Four of Cheese – Kastengel Making

On February 11th, 2010, my roommate, Dita, and I made kastengel at Isa and Yudha’s house. Actually, we decided to make kastengel quite suddenly. Dita said that she wanted to eat kastengel the night before. Her mother sent her the recipe and then we bought the ingredients and made kastengel the next day. We already had some ingredients needed for making kastengel, we only lacked edam cheese and butter. So I went to OK Store to buy some cheese and butter. In OK Store I could not find any edam cheese. So we changed the type of cheese we would use, we used 4 kinds of cheese mixed together: original cheese, cheddar cheese, gouda, and parmesan cheese. That’s why I used the title “Just the Four of Cheese”, inspired from Dita’s blog post title, “Just the four of us – Ikebukuro Trip“.

Making kastengel without proper equipment (mixer) and proper kind of cheese (edam) was very tiring. I mixed the margarine and butter, and then put in some egg and flour, while Dita grated the cheese. It was very tiring to beat the butter which was quite hard. It was also difficult to grate the cheese which was too soft. Dita even shredded her fingers. But after all, we managed to make the kastengel dough and shaped it then baked it in the oven. 45 minutes were needed to bake 1 batch of kastengel. We baked several batches of kastengel, and we left Isa-Yudha’s house at about 00.20 bringing our kastengel home. πŸ˜€
